History

Roberson’s Regional Art Exhibition occurs every five years, and is a celebration of art from the Southern Tier, Central New York, and Northern Pennsylvania. The exhibition has showcased thousands of artists since its inception by Keith Martin and the Society of the Fine Arts in 1957.

Originally known as the Susquehanna Regional Art Exhibition, this show was the first competitive, professionally judged art show in the region. Since its first year, the Regional Art Exhibition has had no limits on who could submit work. Everyone from amateur school children to career artists are encouraged to participate.

Prior to the 1980s, more than 100 paintings, sculptures, and drawings were hand delivered to the Museum every two years by artists hoping to have their work selected for the exhibition. The pieces were then judged by renowned figures in the region’s arts community, such as Whitney Museum’s curator Robert M. Doty and the Department of Education’s Museum Education Specialist Richard Grove for the 1967 exhibition.

Over the years, the exhibition has expanded to make participation more accessible. As of 2025, works can be submitted via Roberson’s website in any medium, including digital.
