The Creative Practice of Cultural Identity
June 3, 2017 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Soyeon Jung is a media artist and Visiting Assistant Professor of Graphic Design at Binghamton University. She will discuss her creative practice and how it draws upon the history and cultural background of Korea. A range of projects spanning video, installation, design, performance and sound are all informed by the specific cultural experience of being in-between two locations. Throughout this body of work, ambiguous visuals describe the fluid concept of memory as it relates to the reconstruction of identity when one is apart from, yet inextricably linked to, one’s homeland.
Jung will discuss how the interactive element of her work positions the viewer in a similar in-between space that creates tension as it upends specific Korean symbols, rituals, and historical events. The interplay between a globally diverse audience and, the at times, opaque cultural symbols she uses creates a dialogue that exposes the problematic constructions of identity and communication inherent across two vastly different cultures.
