The following is a list of public programs offered at Roberson Museum and Science Center. Many of the courses require registration, please call (607) 772-0660. Applications are available on-line and at the front desk. Please note that courses require a minimum number of participants. Public programs are subject to change, so please check the Museum website frequently for additional course offerings, lectures, and program cancelations.

July Camps


Drawing and Animation Camp

Wednesday through Friday, July 7 - 9
9:00 AM - 3:00 PM

$104 for members, $130 for non-members. Grades 5 and up.
Let’s put things in motion: hand and computer drawings, toys and found objects, even the clay models that we build in-class! We’ll begin with the most basic forms of animation, like flipbooks, move on to computer animation programs and end by scripting, filming and editing our own claymation short. All participants will receive a DVD copy of the class film. Materials included.
 

Susquehanna Safari Camp
Wednesday through Friday, July 14 - 16
9:00 AM - 3:00 PM

$104 for members, $130 for non-members. Grades 4 - 7.
Go on safari without ever leaving the Southern Tier.
Through field excursions and laboratory experiments, safari campers will learn about the lives lived and the dangers faced by the plants and animals of the Susquehanna River basin. Materials included.

Adventures in Astronomy Camp
Wednesday through Friday, July 21 - 23
9:00 AM - 3:00 PM

$104 for members, $130 for non-members. Grades 4 - 8.
Learn to navigate by the stars. Create your own constellations and build a rocket to take home with you. Discover how the solar system formed. Step into the world of science and science fiction and make a short video of your own. Learn about robotics and see real robots in action. Peer into a black hole. Create your own space mission. Materials included.
 

Forensic Science Camp:
Crime Scene Investigations
Wednesday through Friday, July 28 - 30
9:00 AM - 3:00 PM

$104 for members, $130 for non-members. Grades 4 - 7.
Participants explore the exciting world of forensic science including crime scene investigation, evidence analysis, witness interrogation and fingerprinting! At the conclusion of the camp students conduct a trial with a jury of parents where they attempt to prove their case using the evidence they have collected. Materials included.

August Camps


Outdoor Inspirations - Art Camp

Wednesday through Friday, August 4 - 6
9:00 AM - 3:00 PM

$104 for members, $130 for non-members. Grades 2 - 4.
Participants will explore the Museum’s grounds, visit Confluence Park, and tour the exhibitions and Roberson Mansion to find inspiration for creating artworks inspired by nature. They will be able to explore various materials including collage, printmaking, sculpture, and natural materials collected from nature. The camp will conclude with a student art show, open to family and friends. Materials included.
 

Studio Art Camp
Wednesday through Friday, August 11 - 13
9:00 AM - 3:00 PM

$104 for members, $130 for non-members.
Grades 4 and up.

Students will discover the elements and principles of art and design by interpreting works from Roberson’s collections and create their own original works of art in Roberson’s studios. Many different art techniques and subjects such as architecture, sculpture, drawing, painting, and more will be explored. Materials included.
 

Interactive Indiana Jones Camp
Wednesday through Friday, August 18 - 20
9:00 AM - 3:00 PM

$104 for members, $130 for non-members. Grades 3 - 6.
Come join Roberson Museum for a week of fun with Indiana Jones Camp. As an archaeologist for a week you will participate in fun activities like a hunt for treasures, research your findings, practice restoration skills, and create a time capsule for future generations to find! But BEWARE; someone may be trying to sabotage your findings! Materials included.

 


FANTASTIC FRIDAYS AT ROBERSON

Fantastic Fridays feature special entertainment from 5:00 to 9:00 PM, and First Fridays of each month will be free to the public during those hours thanks to our sponsors. Check our website frequently to see what is happening.

Animal Feedings
Saturdays, 2:30 PM. Free with general admission.
Public feeding of our gallery critters allows visitors the chance to ask questions
of Museum staff and learn more about the animals in Confluence: A Tale of Two Rivers.

 

A – Zine Class
Saturday, April 10, Noon-4 PM. $15 for members, $16.50 for non-members.
“Zines are homemade magazines, usually cut and pasted and sold in small print runs. They’re currently thriving in New York, following this summer’s Zine Fest in Brooklyn,” says Marisa Meltzer of the New York Post. Explore independent publishing by producing original art and text on the spot without the use of computers or the Internet. Distribute your finished product to the public that very day. Develop a concept, exchange ideas, draw, write, design, and create a layout. Materials are provided. This class is open to all ages. Please register in advance for this class by calling 772-0660.


PROGRAMS FOR ADULTS
 

Beginning Pottery with Terri Johnson
Mondays, February 8 - April 26, 6-9 PM. $250 for members, $290 for non-members. Maximum of 12 students. Students will receive 25 lbs of clay.
Students will build a solid foundation in wheel throwing and the basics of hand building. The class is geared for the student with no clay experience or for those who have taken a class and would like to continue to improve their skills. The entire ceramic process will be covered, including glazing and firing techniques. To register call 772-0660.
 

Roberson’s10th Annual Wine and Food Festival
Thursday, April 22, 5:30-9:00 PM. $45 for Members,
$50 for Non-members. Tickets purchased at the door will be $50.

Over 30 New York state wineries representing Cayuga and Seneca Lakes will be attending along with more than 30 of the area’s finest restaurants and caterers. Tickets sell quickly, so buy early.

FOR TEENAGERS

Thursday Afternoons October through May.
Grades 9 and up.

Free.

Roberson's Teen Apprentices learn the foundation skills for interactive gallery teaching and the curatorial process of exhibitions. They develop programmatic and marketing skills and fabricate exhibitions. Learn about life behind the scenes of a museum. Get real-life job experience and bolster your resume. Applicants must submit a 250 word essay and a letter of reference from a teacher or guidance counselor.

PROGRAMS FOR TEACHERS
 

Professional Development:
Introduction to Visual Thinking Strategies
Learn about a new teaching practice that is sweeping the nation: VTS, the Visual Thinking Strategies teaching methodology. Teachers will learn to use art to develop critical thinking, communication, and visual literacy skills. Students will measurably increase observation skills, evidential reasoning and speculative abilities. In this multi-phased project, teachers will participate in staff development workshops, implement a new curriculum, and assess student learning. Public program tuition is non-refundable. Funding is provided, in part, by general operating support grants from the United Cultural Fund, a program of the Broome County Arts Council.
